Because wood is a hygroscopic material, it absorbs moisture as the humidity levels vary. One of the most distinguishing characteristics of wood is its hygroscopicity. The moisture content of any wood product absorbs and desorbs from the surrounding air until it reaches equilibrium moisture content (EMC), a point where the moisture content of the wood and the moisture content of the surrounding environment are in balance.
What is Kiln Wood Drying?
Kiln drying is a common procedure in wood mills, and it helps to reduce the moisture content of green timber to a “workable” level so that it does not create a variety of problems that can result from excessive moisture levels in wood.
Wood that has been dried in a kiln is known as kiln-dried wood (kiln). For a defined amount of time, you can control the temperature, humidity, and steam levels in a kiln. Allows you to dry wood in a fraction of the time it would take if it had been air-dried.
A traditional kiln generates heat by circulating steam through pipes into the kiln’s environment. Evaporation converts the water content of the wood into vapor, which is then expelled with the hot air from the kiln. A typical conventional kiln is seen schematically in Figure 1. When compared to dehumidification kilns, this sort of kiln consumes a lot of energy, hence it is neither cost-effective nor efficient.
Wood Dehumidification through Drying Machine
Dehumidification using an Airtek heat pump dryer is one of the most often utilized wood drying machines in the woodworking business today. The continual recycling of heat within the chamber rather than the discharging of heat from the conventional kiln as in the case of Airtek heat pump wood dryer is an advantage of employing dehumidification. Rather than being vented to the exterior of the kiln, the majority of the water is condensed on the dehumidifier’s coils and removed as a liquid.
The use of electricity, which is more expensive than gas, makes wood dehumidification machines more cost-effective than traditional kilns because they recycle heat and are more environmentally friendly.
The hot air is circulated over the wood once the air dehumidification kiln reaches a temperature of 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The moisture that has evaporated condenses into a liquid and is discharged as cool water.
